Taiwan’s stock market index surpassed Hong Kong’s for the first time in 30 years on Tuesday. The Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) weighted index closed at 17,341.25 points, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng (HSI) fell to 17,303 points at 2 pm on the same day.

In an interview on Wednesday, Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) said that the Taiwanese economy has been growing rapidly, with GDP exceeding NT$20 trillion (US$ 640,76 billion) each year for the past three years. He says that Tuesday’s milestone demonstrates the strength of Taiwan’s economy.

Chen says that stock markets offer insight into an economy’s development and that President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) administration has been on the right track. Chen adds that Taiwan will continue to promote economic development moving forward.
