TSMC founder Morris Chang (張忠謀) has been awarded the Order of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) bestowed the prestigious medal at the Presidential Palace on Friday, thanking Chang for serving as a leadership representative at the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting on six occasions.
In her speech, the President said that the Taiwan semiconductor industry has become a global player largely due to Chang. Further, by his leadership at APEC, he made Taiwan a country that cannot be ignored. She stated that through his outstanding leadership, unparalleled wisdom, and experience, he has enabled Taiwan to firmly stand on the stage of world development. Tsai emphasized that the world is changing rapidly, with a wave of artificial intelligence applications and structural changes in human society. She added that as long as we uphold the positivity, innovation, and enthusiasm represented by Chang, Taiwan will be able to overcome any difficulties in the future and continue to lead.
Chang said in his speech that he believes this award comes from setting a model through TSMC for establishing a world-class technology company and contributing to Taiwan’s economic growth. He thanked his wife for her wholehearted support and shared this honor with all his TSMC colleagues.
The Order of Dr. Sun Yat-sen is a civilian award instituted in 1941, given as a token of appreciation for outstanding contributions to Taiwan. It has only been previously awarded four times.
