Taiwan is continuing to build its self-defense capabilities as it faces threats from China. In order to maximize its potential, Taiwan is looking to develop its smart technology industry and work together with other countries.

Artificial intelligence is a hot topic in many countries, especially when it pertains to national defense. An American delegation of 25 defense contractors has arrived in Taiwan to meet with CyCraft Technology, a company that works with AI. The two groups plan to exchange ideas about security and technology to see if there are any opportunities for collaboration. 

Defense think tank researcher Su Tzu-yun (蘇紫雲) says the global market for information security could surpass NT$600 billion (US$19.6 billion) soon. He adds that developing protective software could be very beneficial for Taiwan’s industries.

The national defense industry handles numerous threats to information security, which have become a new kind of warfare. Unmanned weapons like drones are particularly susceptible to enemy interference. The American delegation went to visit a Taiwanese drone manufacturer and conducted closed meetings with representatives. 

Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正) says he hasn’t met with the American delegation or talked with them about buying weapons. But he says Taiwan is willing to purchase foreign technology that contributes to the country’s future development and national defense.

U.S.-Taiwan collaborations are still going on behind the scenes, and only time will tell how this cooperation can elevate Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities.
