With election day just around the corner, Taiwan’s political parties have been hard at work. The Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Lai Ching-te (賴清德) together with vice presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) recently held a press conference for international media representatives.
The event was attended by more than 217 foreign media representatives from 128 media outlets coming from 28 different countries.
At the press conference, questions predominantly centered around cross-strait issues and Taiwan-U.S. relations. Lai said that Taiwan being an independent and sovereign country, does not need to declare independence separately. Lai also said that accepting the ‘one China principle’ is not real peace. Lai said that the pursuit of peace relies on one’s strength and not on the goodwill of the aggressor as that goodwill cannot be relied on.
Before the end of the press conference, vice presidential candidate Hsiao said that the trust given by the international community, including the trust given by international friends to President Tsai, was developed over time. Hsiao said that both she and Lai will bring their accumulated experience and credibility to the table as they engage in their future work.
