As election day approaches, campaigners in Indigenous communities are inventing clever slogans to motivate voters to go vote on Saturday.
In a spirited campaign season, amidst the promotional vehicles, there was one message that caught everyone's attention.
Carrying a megaphone, the enthusiastic supporter called out to all the small animals, including mountain deer, snakes, eagles, white rabbits, and all the others in the mountain area, asking them to inform the hunters not to hunt on Saturday because there's something more important - voting. The video, shared online, quickly gained popularity, and reporters quickly tracked down the inventive team behind the slogan.
Pingtung County Councilor Chang Li-hui (張利惠) had another catchy slogan:
"on January 13th. Tell your hunters to take a day off."
The use of such a resonant and humorous campaign slogan was a result of the specific cultural background of Taiwan’s Indigenous communities, where hunting is a common practice.
And councilor Chang also spontaneously presented another slogan during the event, shouting “Give me a slogan hoo hoo hoo hoo!” The entertaining video has resonated with locals.
10 candidates are competing for 3 seats in the Highland Aborigine Constituency, including KMT’s Lu Hsien Yi (盧縣一), DPP’s Wu Li-hua (伍麗華) and independent candidate May Chin (高金素梅). This creative, amusing, and culturally specific campaign method has successfully stirred discussions just before election day.
