Foxconn Technology Group founder Terry Gou (郭台銘) calls for a de-escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait through the return to the One China Framework. Guo shared his thoughts on the escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait in an Op-Ed published by the Washington Post on Monday.
Guo called for a return to the One China Framework as a means for moving forward with direct talks with China, saying that this is for Taiwan to fully protect its democracy, freedom and way of life. He says the ruling party is walking away from the 1992 Consensus despite the massive mutual investments, two-way trade, and economic growth it has facilitated. He criticized the DPP administration for abandoning the One China Framework thereby negatively impacting Taiwan’s economy, making Taiwan less secure and increasing the threat of war.
In response, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated that there has never been a One China Framework. Only a One China Principle exists which was unilaterally created by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to annex Taiwan and abolish the Republic of China.
MAC pointed out that under the One China Principle white paper published by the CPC, the Taiwan government was relegated to a local authority of mainland China’s territory. MAC said that making the 1992 Consensus the premise for cross-strait dialogue actually forces Taiwan to interact as a local government rather than a separate country. This is contrary to the fact that Taiwan is a sovereign state and has never been a part of China.
