Google’s cybersecurity experts say they have noticed a “massive increase” in Chinese cyberattacks against Taiwan in the past 6 months. That’s according to Google senior engineering manager Kate Morgan, who made the comments on Wednesday during the launch of a new cybersecurity center in Málaga, Spain. 

Morgan says that Google is tracking more than 100 hacking groups in China that are carrying out attacks against the defense sector, private industries, and the government in Taiwan. She says that hackers are using more sophisticated techniques, such as breaking into private routers and using them to launch attacks, making tracing the source more difficult. 

Aside from China, Morgan says that North Korea and Iran continue to pose serious cybersecurity threats, while she says Russian cyberattacks have mostly been focused on Ukraine. 

The cybersecurity center in Málaga is Google’s third in Europe, with additional centers in Dublin, Ireland, and Berlin, Germany.
