Saint Kitts and Nevis celebrates 43 years of Taiwan ties as performers prepare for Tainan festival debut

Saint Christopher (Saint Kitts) and Nevis celebrated 43 years of independence and diplomatic relations with Taiwan at an outdoor cultural event in Taipei on Friday, October 16, where visiting performers gave a short dance and percussion performance ahead of their scheduled debut at an international festival in Tainan on Saturday. The First Federal Brotherhood Drummers and Okolo Tegremantine Arts Theatre will perform at the 2026 Nan Ying International Folklore Festival from October 17 to 25. This will be the first time groups from Saint Kitts and Nevis have participated in the festival taking place in the southern Taiwanese city. Friday's celebration, titled “Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Park,” was held in Shilin District and was attended by representatives from Taiwan’s diplomatic allies. It featured singing, drumming, and dance performances by groups from both countries, including Taiwan's youth ambassadors. The small Caribbean nation gained independence from the United Ki...

MAC reiterates ‘red lines’ for entertainers performing in China ahead of PRC National Day

With the October 1 National Day of the People’s Republic of China approaching, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) reiterated its two “red lines” for entertainers developing careers in China during a press conference on Thursday, September 24. Taiwanese entertainers performing in China are frequently asked to make political statements or take positions on cross-Strait issues. Taiwanese media recently reported that several Taiwanese artists, including Wang Leehom (王力宏), Jeannie Hsieh (謝金燕), Harlem Yu (庾澄慶), and Jam Hsiao (蕭敬騰), were labeled as being from “Taiwan, China” during a recent Mid-Autumn Festival gala in Macau. MAC Deputy Minister and Spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) said that based on preliminary information, the label was chosen by the event organizers and not the artists themselves. He emphasized that China has consistently referred to Taiwanese acts performing in China, Hong Kong, or Macau as being from “Taiwan, China.” In addition, t...

Minimum wage to go up by 4.7% from January 1

After over seven hours of deliberation, the Minimum Wage Deliberation Committee decided on Thursday, September 24, to raise monthly and hourly minimum pay in Taiwan. Monthly minimum wage will rise from NT$29,500 (US$928) to NT$30,900 (US$972), an increase of 4.7 percent, while minimum hourly pay will go from NT$196 (US$6.16) to NT$205 (US$6.45). The changes will take effect on January 1 next year. Labor Minister Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) said that inflation is projected to reach 2.07 percent this year, and that committee members reached near-unanimous consensus that this figure should be fully reflected in the wage adjustment. He noted that the real point of contention between labor and business representatives was how to share the benefits of this year’s remarkable 11.05 percent economic growth rate. Labor representatives argued that given this year’s strong economic performance, workers should share as much as possible in the fruits of economic growth. Business groups, on t...

President meets with Foundation for Defense of Democracies delegation

President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) received a delegation from the U.S.-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) at the Presidential Office on Thursday, September 24. Lai thanked FDD and its visiting members for their continued attention to Taiwan’s whole-of-society defense resilience and strong support for Taiwan through concrete action. Lai welcomed FDD’s China Program Chairman Matt Pottinger, who served as a deputy national security advisor during U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term. Pottinger delivered a closing keynote address at the recent international forum organized by the Presidential Office’s Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee. In it, he argued that seeking peace through strength is a necessary condition for sustaining Taiwan’s freedom and prosperity. Lai said that Pottinger’s argument reflects exactly the direction in which Taiwan continues to push. He noted that the country’s freedom and prosperity affect not only the future of its peop...

WATCH: China pours money into AI as youth joblessness rises

China is pouring resources into artificial intelligence while its domestic economy struggles to create jobs and sustain consumer spending. Beijing has backed the industry through public funds, subsidies, procurement, and data-center construction. Bloomberg reported in June that officials were preparing a five-year plan worth about 295 billion U.S. dollars for a nationwide AI computing network. That proposal has not been announced as a finalized budget. The scale of that ambition contrasts with weak demand at home. Official data show unemployment among urban 16- to 24-year-olds, excluding students, reached 18.9 percent in August. Domestic car sales fell about 20 percent in the first half of this year. Even economists with ties to Chinese institutions are questioning whether a technology boom can lift the broader economy. Tsinghua University economist Li Daokui (李稻葵) says high-tech growth alone cannot support China’s vast consumer market. People’s Bank ...

WATCH: Trump-Xi summit opens with low expectations

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the White House on September 24, their second meeting this year after Trump visited Beijing in May. The state visit includes a formal welcome and a state dinner for Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan (彭丽媛). Trump says his relationship with Xi is strong and predicts the two countries will achieve significant results. But expectations for a major breakthrough remain low. The talks come as Washington and Beijing face disputes over tariffs, advanced technology, Taiwan and China’s ties with Iran. Both leaders also face domestic political pressures. Trump is seeking economic achievements before the November midterm elections, while Xi wants to project strength ahead of a major Chinese Communist Party meeting. Analysts say the summit may extend the two countries’ trade truce and prevent relations from deteriorating, rather than produce a comprehensive agreement. Artificial intelligence is another...

Groups urge shared responsibility for AI literacy education

Education and child-welfare groups urged the government Thursday to strengthen students’ awareness of artificial intelligence risks and ensure AI literacy education does not fall solely on classroom teachers. The groups held a forum ahead of Teachers’ Day, saying students should learn not only how to use AI tools but also how to identify inaccurate or biased information. A 2025 survey by the magazine Parenting found that 92% of students had used AI while nearly half had never considered or did not know that AI could provide incorrect answers. The social advocacy division at EdYouth, an NGO focused on educational reform, said students should also understand risks, including systemic bias, discrimination, manipulated images, and cyberbullying. “We believe the next step should focus on the systemic bias and discrimination produced by this technology, as well as risks such as synthetic images and campus bullying,” said its advocate Yu Chao-yi (余兆宜). Teacher organizations...

Taiwan labor groups seek 7.77% minimum wage increase

Taiwan’s annual minimum wage review opened Thursday, September 24, with labor groups seeking a 7.77% increase, while business representatives urged caution and proposed an “AI welfare sovereign fund” to share profits from the technology sector nationwide. The current minimum wage is NT$29,500 (US$930) per month and NT$196 (US$6.16) per hour. Approval of another increase would mark the 11th consecutive annual hike. Labor groups say inflation should be fully reflected and workers should receive half the benefits of projected economic growth exceeding 11%. The proposal would raise monthly pay to NT$31,792 and the hourly rate to NT$211 (US$6.63). Confederation of Taipei Trade Unions Chairperson Chiu Yi-kan (邱奕淦) said an increase of 8% or even 10% would be justified. “The 7.77% we are talking about is already a concession,” Chiu said. Business groups countered that economic growth is concentrated in artificial and high-tech industries, while traditional manufacturers, ...

Cantonese reel wins top prize in Foreign Ministry’s short film contest

A Cantonese-language short-form video exploring Taiwan’s nature, night markets, and democracy has won first place in the Foreign Ministry’s FindingTAIWAN short film competition. Sam Leung (梁嘉軒) and Caleb Chen (陳昀) received NT$200,000 in prize money for their 59-second film “The Most Beautiful Scenery in Taiwan,” which beat 279 entries from 45 countries and regions. Speaking at the awards ceremony held in Taipei on Thursday, September 24, Deputy Foreign Minister François Wu (吳志中) said this year’s theme, “Where We Connect,” aimed to highlight Taiwan’s links to the world. Nearly 80% of the entries came from foreign nationals, while the number of participating countries and regions nearly doubled from last year, he added. “Some works showed their love for this land and depicted stories of people striving for democracy and freedom; others shared, from the perspective of someone in a foreign place, how they found a sense of home and belonging here,” Wu said. In t...

EU: Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan; Taipei welcomes support for international participation

The European Union has reaffirmed support for Taiwan’s international participation, stating that U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan. In response, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said the EU’s position underscores the high priority that like-minded democratic partners place on Taiwan and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan will continue to strengthen cooperation with the EU and like-minded partners to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific, defend the rules-based international order, and contribute more to global peace, security and prosperity, the ministry said this Thursday. In remarks to reporters, an EU spokesperson said that, provided it complies with relevant rules and practices, Taiwan should be allowed to participate in international organizations, especially where its professional expertise and capabilities can add value. The spokesperson added that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are of strat...

A rare whale shark sighting off Xiaoliuqiu has divers thrilled, and now, Taiwan is offering rewards to help identify these unique, spotted giants. Video script: A whale shark has recently been spotted off the waters of Xiaoliuqiu, delighting divers and visitors who captured rare footage of the gentle giant swimming close by. Taiwan’s esports players at the Nagoya Asian Games secured their first medal in the battle-royale game Naraka: Bladepoint. The five-person team claimed bronze after losing 0-3 to China in the semifinals. The team included Liu Tang-shiun (柳棠曛), Chen Shang-yi (陳尚億), Cheng Hsu-yu (鄭勗佑), Yen Kai-en (顏慨恩), and Yeh Chih-yu (葉芝妤). Following the match, Yen said the team felt less pressure going into the semi-finals, and that he believed they performed their best as they faced strong opponents. Yen said at least they reached their goal of standing on the podium. “At least we won a medal, and that’s enough to satisfy us,” Yen said. He added that he believes it’s a good start and that the team will continue to aim for medals in other events as well. Coach Chuang Pai-hung (莊柏宏) admitted that he knew the Chinese team would be their toughest opponent before the match began, as the team consists mostly of professional players. He noted that the win rate against the...

President touts record-breaking defense budget, self-reliance efforts

The government will allocate over NT$1.3 trillion (US$41 billion) to national defense next year, investing in military procurement, international cooperation, and defense self-reliance, particularly in strengthening industries like drones and robotics. That statement came from President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday, September 23. Lai attended a banquet organized by the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Kaohsiung. In his remarks, he said that overseas Taiwanese businesses have worked tirelessly for many years, serving as an important bridge connecting Taiwan to international markets, talent, and technology. Addressing national security issues of concern to Taiwanese businesspeople, Lai stated that through the collective efforts of Taiwan’s population, the country achieved 8.76 percent economic growth last year and 14.15 percent in the first half of this year. As the economy improves, government tax revenue increases accordingly, and the Cabinet will allocate over ...

Paraguay president calls Taiwan exclusion from UN a ‘stain’

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios delivered nearly three minutes of remarks in support of Taiwan’s participation in international institutions during his address at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, September 23. He declared that Paraguay will not remain neutral on Taiwan, but stands on its side, and called Taiwan’s exclusion a stain on the United Nations. Paraguay has formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and Peña has made multiple state visits to the country. He has spoken out in support of Taiwan’s international space at UN General Debates for a number of years. Peña said that while the Strait of Hormuz is today’s problem, a looming crisis in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the Taiwan Strait, could become tomorrow’s. He said developments there would not remain merely a regional matter, but would ripple out to Japan and all of East and Southeast Asia, with the global economy bearing the initial impact. Peña stated that the poten...

The foreign ministers and high-level representatives from eight member states of the European and Indo-Pacific Partners (EIPP) bloc issued a joint statement promoting peace, stability, sustainability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific and European regions. The statement also encourages dialogue and opposes any unilateral attempts to change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. Representatives from Australia, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Republic of Korea, and the United Kingdom met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, September 22. They acknowledged that the strategic environment has become more volatile and fragmented since their last meeting in September 2025. The statement notes that EIPP cooperation is rooted in shared principles and interests including democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and international law. It reconfirms the bloc’s commitment to protecting and strengthening the multilateral syst...

Breaking free from reliance on the weather: Yunlin County drives agricultural transformation through smart technology. Yunlin County is using smart technology to reduce farmers’ dependence on weather and accelerate the transformation of its agriculture sector, County Magistrate Chang Li-shan (張麗善) said Tuesday, September 22. Speaking at the 2026 International Forum on Talent Sustainability, Chang said technology is helping reshape Yunlin into a modern hub combining agriculture, industry and commerce. Yunlin, one of Taiwan’s major agricultural counties, has long faced challenges including an aging population and an exodus of young people. Chang said average household income has risen from NT$880,000 (US$28,000) when she took office to NT$1.14 million (US$35,000), while disposable spending increased to NT$939,000 (US$30,000), ranking 12th nationwide. The county has also been selected twice this year as one of the Intelligent Community Forum’s (ICF) Top7 Intelligent Commun...

Yields, performance, ecosystem, packaging to determine competitiveness in 1.4 nm chips: Expert

Real yield rates, transistor performance, customer ecosystem, and advanced packaging integration will determine TSMC’s competitiveness against Samsung and Intel at the 1.4 nm semiconductor manufacturing process, rather than production timelines alone. That statement came from Liu Pei-chen (劉佩真), a researcher at the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER). Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) A14, 1.4 nm manufacturing process will enter trial production in 2027 and mass production the following year. The company has previously stated that the scale and lifecycle of the A14 family are expected to surpass the 2 nm generation. TSMC will also launch derivative processes within the series, including A13 and A12. Liu noted that as demand for AI and high-performance computing continues to grow, the market’s requirements for chip performance and power efficiency are also rising. The A14 introduces next-generation transistor architecture and backside power deli...

Reflecting the event’s focus on young people, most performers were young artists from professional troupes ...

National Federation of Teachers Unions unveils 10-point education platform to local election candidates

This Wednesday, on the eve of Teacher’s Day, the National Federation of Teachers Unions (NFTU) and member unions from northern, central, and southern Taiwan as well as outlying islands jointly presented their education policy platform for this year’s county and city mayoral elections. The NFTU presented candidates with an education platform spanning four areas and ten demands. These include reducing class sizes, increasing the number of special education teaching assistants, lessening administrative workloads, protecting teachers’ right to disconnect after working hours, ensuring fair compensation for labor, and building a safety network both inside and outside schools. Director of the NFTU’s Lienchiang County branch Lin Pei-hsuan (林佩璇) highlighted the importance of making administrative work a dedicated full-time role, pointing out that a school’s general affairs director often deals with matters like construction project timelines, bidding, or procurement. None of ...

Health Token program to incentivize healthy behavior, bolster prevention over treatment: Minister

Health Minister Shih Chung-liang (石崇良) said at a “World Patient Safety Day” event on Wednesday, September 23, that a good healthcare system prioritizes prevention over treatment, detecting diseases early and reversing their progression. He said this is why the Health Ministry introduced its Health Token program, incentivizing healthy behavior among the public. The World Health Organization (WHO) designated September 17 as Patient Safety Day. The Taiwan Alliance of Patients’ Organizations, marking its tenth anniversary this year, organized the “2026 World Patient Safety Day” event on September 23, inviting Minister Shih to attend and deliver remarks. Shih noted that medication issues account for the largest share of reported patient safety incidents, and that medication-related errors are the leading cause of medical harm and adverse events both domestically and internationally. Patients on medication for chronic conditions face the highest risk, as they often have mul...

Foreign Minister urges support for Taiwan’s meaningful UN participation

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) has called on the international community to uphold the rules-based international order, address China’s deliberate misinterpretation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, and support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN. Lin made the appeal in an opinion article published Monday by Dutch media outlet NieuwRechts under the headline “Restoring trust: Taiwan’s rightful place in the free world,” as the 81st UN General Assembly convenes in New York. The general debate is being held from September 22 to 26 and 28. Lin said the rules-based order faces mounting pressure as China uses gray-zone tactics, including military intimidation, cyberattacks, and economic coercion, in an attempt to unilaterally reshape international rules and norms. Taiwan, he said, is on the frontline of efforts to defend freedom and democracy and will continue to safeguard the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. He said peace and stabilit...

Minimum wage likely to be raised past NT$30,000 monthly and NT$200 hourly: Labor Minister

Taiwan’s Minimum Wage Review Committee is scheduled to convene this Thursday to finalize the 2027 minimum wage adjustment, with labor representatives pushing for 7.77% while employers are proposing 3%. This year’s review coincides with strong overall economic growth in Taiwan, though conditions vary across industries. Chairman of the Third Wednesday Association Lin Por-Fong (林伯豐) recently argued that an adjustment of around 3% would be more reasonable in light of operating pressures on traditional industries. Taiwan Confederation of Trade Unions (TCTU) Director Tai Kuo-jung (戴國榮), however, reiterated the 7.77% demand. This would raise the monthly minimum wage from NT$29,500 to NT$31,792 (US$911 to $981) and the hourly wage from NT$196 to NT$211 (US$6.05 to $6.51). In an interview on POP Radio, Labor Minister Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) explained that the minimum wage review requires all sides to present their rationale and the relevant data. “It’s not as simple as a...

Minister says his China travel experience cannot be extrapolated to all Taiwan nationals

Labor Minister Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) said in an interview with POP Radio on Wednesday, September 23, that his safe return from the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Human Resource Development Ministerial Meeting in Nanjing does not mean travel to China is necessarily safe for ordinary Taiwanese citizens. Hung traveled to Nanjing on September 20, marking the first time a Taiwanese minister visited China since President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) took office in May 2024. During Wednesday’s interview, he explained that he did not apply for or use China’s special travel document for Taiwanese nationals, the Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents. Instead, he entered using an official invitation letter and followed the mature APEC framework with clearly defined rules. He returned to Taiwan on September 22. Hung said that his experience cannot be directly compared to the risks faced by ordinary people traveling to China. He said that travel itineraries of many Taiwa...

Poll finds satisfaction with Taiwan government performance at 62.1%

Public satisfaction with Taiwan’s government performance rose to 62.1%, the highest level in seven polls conducted every two months since September last year, according to a survey released Wednesday, September 23, by the Taiwan Inspiration Association (TIA). Satisfaction with the government led by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) was up 5.8 percentage points from the previous poll in July and up 26 points from this time last year. “I think the high satisfaction level comes largely from economic development,” said Tunghai University professor Albert Chiu (邱師儀). At a press conference discussing the poll findings held at the Legislative Yuan, the political science professor suggested that some government policies have broad public support, including its China policy and NT$10,000 cash distribution policy. In contrast, the survey found discontent with the opposition-controlled legislature. Dissatisfaction stood at 63.4%, compared with 34.8% who said they were satisfied. Amon...

NSC adviser assures Taiwan-US cooperation is only expanding ahead of Trump-Xi summit

United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) are scheduled to hold the second Trump-Xi summit of the year in Washington this Thursday. They are expected to focus on issues including Taiwan, arms sales, tariffs, artificial intelligence, and U.S.-China economic and trade relations. Of particular interest is a potential US$14 billion arms sale to Taiwan, the announcement of which could be further delayed due to the summit or even become a bargaining chip in negotiations. National Security Council adviser Alex Huang (黃重諺) said in an interview Tuesday that many areas of Taiwan-U.S. cooperation have not only continued but have increased in scale. Per his assessment, it is unlikely that Washington would decline to approve the relevant arms sales to Taiwan following the leaders’ summit. “Taiwan, or the first island chain, is a key security concern for the United States based on the U.S. National Security Strategy and National Defense Strategy....

Taiwan’s Digital Ministry outlines four priorities for AI talent development

Taiwan’s Digital Ministry says AI professionals must combine technical skills with industry expertise as the technology rapidly transforms the workplace. Deputy Minister Isabel Hou (侯宜秀) made the remarks Tuesday, September 22, at a media forum, saying strong professional knowledge helps individuals and organizations gain more from AI. Hou said AI workers must also develop the ability to learn independently and continuously because the technology is evolving rapidly. She encouraged participation in professional communities to help individuals keep pace with new tools and developments. The ministry’s four priorities for AI talent development are domain expertise with AI, hands-on implementation, collaborative innovation, and continuous improvement. It is also developing industry talent competency guidelines to help companies and training institutions identify the AI skills and educational priorities needed in different sectors. Hou compared learning AI to learning how to...

At this year’s Excellent Teacher Awards, 72 teachers received the Teacher Excellence Award, 20 received the Education Contribution Award, and 521 educators who have completed 40 years of service were honored as Senior Outstanding Teachers. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰), and Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao (鄭英耀) attended the event on Tuesday to present awards. The youngest recipient of this year’s Teacher Excellence Award was Lo Wan-chen (羅琬臻), a director at New Taipei Municipal Fongjhu High School that primarily serves marginalized girls. Drawing on her musical expertise, Lo has helped students participate in choirs and engage with the local community, in addition to taking them hiking and providing other forms of holistic support. The president thanked every teacher for their dedication, saying that although society has entered the age of artificial intelligence, nothing can replace a teacher’s counsel. He noted that the government...

Taiwan stocks hit record intraday high of 48,601 points

Taiwan’s benchmark stock index surged to a new intraday high of 48,601 points Tuesday, September 22, breaking above its previous peak of 48,218 and rising nearly 900 points at the open. The rally followed broad gains across all four major U.S. indexes as investors grew more optimistic about interest rates and gradually moved past concerns over an “AI apocalypse.” The latest U.S. consumer price index (CPI) data for July showed significant cooling in inflation, strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve may hold interest rates steady and potentially cut them in the future. The developments helped technology stocks in the United States and semiconductor shares across Asia launch a strong rebound. The New Taiwan dollar also strengthened, briefly reaching 31.66 per U.S. dollar. UBS sharply raised its forecast for global artificial intelligence capital spending, projecting that investment will approach $1 trillion by 2026. Sean Kuo (郭修誠), president at UOB Asset Manag...

Taiwan companies urged to partner with Indian firms to enter growing market

More Taiwanese companies are seeking to enter India’s market, but many remain hesitant because they are unfamiliar with local business practices and regulations, according to a CNA report. Indian companies with long-standing ties to Taiwanese businesses say the best way to establish a presence is to work with local partners and pursue arrangements that benefit both sides. The Foundation for Commerce and Culture Interchange and the Taipei Computer Association led a delegation to New Delhi for bilateral discussions with Indian companies. The forum, themed “Exploring Cross-Border Cooperation,” brought Taiwanese technology executives and Indian business leaders together to discuss supply chain opportunities, technological innovation, and strategic partnership. Amrit Lal Manwani, chairperson of India’s Sahasra Group, said Indian regulations are more complex and strict, making local partners essential. Manwani said cooperation could take the form of direct partnerships, technol...
