Designed by the firm C.Y. Lee & Partners, Taipei 101 resembles a segmented stalk of bamboo, a plant associated with resilience and growth. The layering gives the building its distinctive tiered appearance, somewhat representing an abstract pagoda. Taipei 101's tuned mass damper, a 660-ton steel sphere suspended between the 87th and 92nd floors, is 660 tons, roughly the weight of 132 elephants.
