Cherry blossoms in Asia are a seasonal marker. In much of East Asia, they signal a brief transition period between winter and spring. In Japan in particular, the blooming of sakura is followed closely each year. The cultural weight of cherry blossoms in Japan is tied to ideas about impermanence. In Taiwan, the blossoms appear in different places, shades, and cultural activities.
