EP023 - The Franchise Model

In the summer of 2026, the United States sent seventeen of its most powerful business executives to Beijing. The list included the CEOs of Nvidia and Qualcomm — the two American companies most directly affected by US chip export controls on China. It included the head of BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager. It included the chiefs of Visa and Mastercard. Seventeen people who between them represent the commanding heights of American technology, finance, and payment infrastructure — all in Beijing, in the same week.

That same week, Japan and the Philippines formalized negotiations to draw a maritime boundary line through waters off Taiwan's eastern coast. China responded by sending coastguard ships into those same waters — the first time Beijing has done so without a military exercise as cover. And Xi Jinping flew to Pyongyang to meet Kim Jong-un.

Three separate moves. One very clear direction.
