EP013: Stories of little people told around the world

Join host Joey Chou as he dives into socio-economic issues faced by Taiwan, and their broader impact beyond the reefs of this island nation.

Today, we explore a fascinating aspect of Indigenous heritage—the enduring tales of the Koko’ Ta’ay, or little people, found in the oral traditions of Taiwan and the Pacific islands. These stories, passed down through generations, have sparked intrigue and debate among scholars. Are they purely mythological, or do they hold deeper cultural or historical truths?

Our guest today is Tobie Openshaw, Affiliated Research Fellow at the Centre of Austronesian Studies at the University of Central Lancashire. With over a decade of experience working closely with SaiSiyat elders in Taiwan, Tobie brings a wealth of insight into these enduring legends. In addition to his research, Tobie lectures on Indigenous issues and documentary filmmaking in Taipei. Let’s dive in and uncover the mysteries of the Koko’ Ta’ay with Tobie Openshaw.
