China's pursuit of the Lufeng oilfield, located in the South China Sea only 40 kilometers from Taiwan's Dongsha Island, results in an invasion of Taiwan's waters, sparking legal and national security concerns.

Large drilling platforms loom over the water as a sign of China's actively developing offshore oil industry. While on one hand a sign of China's independence, in recent years, its drilling has encroached on Taiwan's economic waters. The US-based think tank The Jamestown Foundation released a report on August 2nd titled "Rigging the Game: PRC Oil Structures Encroach on Taiwan's Pratas Island".
The report details how China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), a state-owned company, has deployed multiple vessels, platform jackets, and drilling platforms within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Taiwan's Dongshan (Pratas) Island.
