This past Friday marked the 11th year since Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement. Protestors occupied commercial districts for 79 days, using umbrellas to shield themselves from police pepper spray and tear gas. The impetus of the protests was citizens' demand for more transparent elections, following the Beijing-backed implementation of a pre-screening process for all candidates in the 2014 chief executive election. After 79 days, the protests were brought to an end under Beijing's heavy crackdown.
