Analysts explain why Taiwan was absent from U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Sept. 19 phone call.
United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) held a nearly two-hour phone call on Sept. 19, focusing on trade and the TikTok agreement, with no mention of Taiwan. Analysts said the omission did not signal Taiwan’s waning importance, but reflected the urgency of settling economic issues ahead of the APEC summit.
Taiwan was not raised because recent U.S.-Taiwan interactions have been relatively stable, leaving Beijing with little room to exploit the issue, explained Tamkang University Graduate Institute of China Studies Director Chang Wu-ueh (張五岳). He said the call mainly paved the way for a Xi–Trump meeting at APEC.
