Danjiang Bridge, or Tamkang Bridge, Taiwan’s third-longest river crossing, marked a key milestone on Tuesday. Its final segment was lifted into place, signaling the bridge’s progression into the final stage of construction. Designed by the world-famous late architect Zaha Hadid, the bridge will become the world’s largest single-tower asymmetric cable-stayed bridge when completed. It is expected to be open to traffic by May 2026.
Spanning the Tamsui River estuary, the bridge rises nearly 70 stories with an elegant, asymmetric cable design inspired by Taiwan’s Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. Hadid, the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, passed away nine years ago, making this project one of her final legacies. The engineering challenges of this decades-long project were significant.
