Taiwan-Japan pledge stronger ties in trade, security, and regional cooperation
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) welcomed the new chairman of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, Shuzo Sumi , at the Presidential Office on Tuesday, marking his first visit since taking office in June. Lai expressed hopes that Sumi’s leadership, backed by his rich experience and vision, would further strengthen Taiwan-Japan relations and deepen cooperation.
On Wednesday, Sumi met with Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) at the Cabinet, emphasizing shared democratic values and a commitment to ongoing exchanges. Premier Cho praised the Taiwan-Japan friendship as a global example and highlighted the expansion of cooperation in trade, disaster prevention, and high-tech industries, citing Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC’s plant in Kumamoto as a strategic partnership that demonstrates complementary strengths.
Premier Cho also urged both sides to accelerate negotiations on free trade or economic partnership agreements to institutionalize cooperation and safeguard regional supply chains. He ...
